Kidstart’s Dreamtime books are the inspiration of artist and writer, Dan Purches. Purches’ tribal name is Naiura. His maternal grandfather was a member of the Burramattagal clan of the Darug people. His people frequented the Parramatta River area of New South Wales.

From a young age Naiura’s mother taught him to be an artist. She also shared her Dreamtime stories with him; each passed down through successive generations by word of mouth. Naiura has now captured these stories for posterity in a colourful series of illustrated books.

The Kidstart Dreamtime series includes six books―three hardcover books and three complementary softcover colouring-in books. Each hardcover book is 44 pages. Their indigenous stories are presented in a colourful double-page spread. The left-hand page features a story in language children will understand while the right-hand page brings this story to life with an original artwork.

Each hardcover book includes a simple reference page that explains the meaning of symbols commonly used in Aboriginal art. As they read, children are encouraged to search for these symbols, then share their meaning.

The colouring-in books feature a similar format. Each book is 32 pages. They present a short, easy-to-understand Dreamtime story on one page. On the opposing page, a colouring-in image encourages children to create their own dot art masterpiece. Each story also includes a small colour image of its accompanying artwork to guide children as they colour.

The Kidstart Dreamtime series is an elegant solution for adding an indigenous element to any existing boutique gift offering or expanding an established children’s educational range.
