Food, as much as fashion, is influenced by fads, trends and whims, but the humble mashed potato has held an enduring presence, as a comfort food, on most of our plates.
Mashed potato is still here―and tipped to be the go-to side dish for this year―but for most of us it will be in a lighter, silkier, fluffier version that can only really be produced with the inimitable ricer.
Swiss food-prep specialist, Zyliss, has turned its sights to creating the perfect 21st century ricer―one that is, above all, a multi-purpose tool that is easier to use, easier to clean and can turn its hand to any number of ingredients.
The ricer will puree fruits and vegetables, prepare the healthiest of baby foods, coulis and sauces and even drain the excess water from cooked spinach. But above all, it produces the smoothest, fluffiest mashed potato without over-processing―no lumps, no gummy texture―and you don’t even need to peel the potatoes. The skins will be left behind, trapped by the ricing plate.
Ergonomics play a big part in the Zyliss model―slim handle with soft-touch secure grip, integrated pot rest to facilitate ricing straight into a pan or bowl and two removable discs to ensure effortless processing of any number of ingredients.
The ricer comes with two stainless steel perforated discs―coarse and fine―to ensure the correct texture is achieved, depending on the dish. The coarse disc is for dishes such as spatzle, gnocchi, fritters and mashed potato; the fine disc for pureed baby food, coulis and sauces.
The unique two-piece design of the Zyliss potato ricer means the appliance comes apart for easy and thorough cleaning. All parts are dishwasher safe. Retails for $69.95.
