Found in the urine of mammals, Urea is a protein by-product which plays an important role in the preservation of skin hydration and integrity. Attracting and binding to water molecules and improving skin barrier function, this naturally occurring compound decreases with age and can render the skin susceptible to severe dryness and wrinkles, including other problematic conditions such as hyperkeratosis, psoriasis, eczema and ichthyosis.
Designed to complement an evening skincare regime, Evidence Skincare (ESK) introduces its latest cosmeceutical release, the Hydroxy Overnight Mask. Formulated with Salicylic Acid (five per cent), a Beta Hydroxy Acid (BHA), and Urea (10 per cent), this versatile treatment actively assists in the management and treatment of acne, premature ageing and transepidermal water loss.
Penetrating the top epidermal layers and dissolving the intercellular junction (desmosomes) between healthy and dead skin cells, the mask gently exfoliates the face by breaking down structural keratin proteins and softening cornified skin cells. Offering a sebo-supressive effect, this gentle formulation inhibits excess sebum production and purges the skin of bacterial debris and acne-causing microbes.
Considered a gentler alternative to water-soluble Alpha Hydroxy Acids (AHAs), Salicylic Acid, a fat-soluble antibacterial and anti-inflammatory aspirin derivative, is shown to effectively treat and manage acne lesions, including post-inflammatory hyper-pigmentation, redness and enlarged pores.
As Urea is proven to serve as both a moisturising agent and penetrative enhancer when used in conjunction with a key active, the mask’s exfoliating benefits also address the physical signs of photo damage, including pigmentation, discolouration, texture, fines lines and wrinkles.
“Premature ageing is often packaged up with impaired skin barrier function,” says Dr Ginni Mansberg, co-founder of ESK.
“Our skin is susceptible to both biological and environmental stressors, sometimes simultaneously, so it was important for us to create an affordable product that scientifically tackles multiple skin concerns at once.”
Designed to be used on freshly cleansed skin one to two times a week as a night mask―or as a spot treatment when needed―the Hydroxy Overnight Mask retails for $50.
