On the surface, the colour, the pattern, the design are certainly things that draw you to a display of mugs in store, but to most people the feel of the mug is more important. The weight of it. How your hand fits comfortably in the handle. The feel of the rim when you put the mug to your lips.
A wide shallow cup will allow your tea or coffee to cool much quicker than a tall narrow mug. A solid rim allows you to down your drink easily, while a thin delicate rim invites smaller sips and taking time over tea.
A more modern consideration is whether or not a mug will fit under the spout of your home coffee machine and of course it must be dishwasher and microwave safe.
While no-one would suggest putting a mug to your lips in store, being able to pick up a mug and put your hands around it, feeling the weight and size, is all but essential when purchasing what will become your new favourite mug.
