Tolu Australia is redefining sustainable beachwear
Sustainable fashion brand Tolu Australia fuses the vibrant spirit of founder Liliana Rubiano’s Colombian heritage with the relaxed coastal lifestyle of Australia.
As a mum, small business owner and lover of family, travel and community, Rubiano aims to bring vibrant, eco-friendly beachwear to life—designed for adventure, connection and effortless beach days.
“Our flagship product, sustainably crafted men’s boardshorts, has gained popularity among families who value bold designs, eco-conscious choices and products that inspire connection,” she enthuses.
“Each pair tells a story—not only through its unique, exotic prints but also through our commitment to sustainability, as they are made with recycled materials and UV-protective fabrics.”
It all began in 2013 at the Bondi Markets selling Panama hats. However, Tolu truly took shape in 2017 when Rubiano left her career in international logistics to follow her passion for entrepreneurship. Inspired by her Colombian roots, she began importing bold, stylish men’s swimwear crafted by artisans.
“Over time, we expanded to include matching father-and-son swimwear, lightweight Turkish towels and cosy kids’ poncho towels—perfect for making family beach days vibrant, fun and hassle-free.”
Along the way, she studied fashion business, gained experience with renowned brands such as Prada and Tiffany & Co and partnered with leading retailers like The Iconic, Myer and David Jones.
“After navigating challenges (including a pivot during Covid) and growing my family, I am thrilled to now offer a range of products that celebrate family, connection and my love for Colombian craftsmanship and the Australian beach lifestyle,” she says.
“We believe beach days should be vibrant, effortless and centred around relaxation and family togetherness. Each pair of swim shorts is thoughtfully designed and expertly crafted in Colombia, using certified recycled materials. Our fabrics meet the Oeko-Tex Standard 100, ensuring they are free from harmful substances and gentle on sensitive skin.”
Additionally, they carry the Global Recycled Standard (GRS) certification by Ecocert Greenlife, guaranteeing they are made from recycled materials and adhere to the highest environmental and social standards.
“We are excited to showcase our products at the Gift + Home Expo, stand 2U9, from 15 to 18 February at the Sydney Showground.”
