Is artificial intelligence the future of home design?
The technology revolution is showing no sign of slowing down, as artificial intelligence (AI) is making its way into the home industry.
According to a recent report, AI software application will grow from US$1.4 billion in 2016 to US$60 billion by 2025. While AI has dominated various industries for a while, it has only just introduced a new way of creating products by producing the Elbo chair, which combines aerospace engineering software with artisanal craftsmanship.
Interior design might be the next field where AI replaces humans. Planner 5D is currently creating machine learning algorithms that will train on over 40 million real user projects, offering an opportunity for AI to figure out the thinking process behind home design―how people choose the place for their bed, lights, and so on. This thinking process will be learned by AI and optimised.
“Currently, only professional designers know design rules and techniques,” says Alexey Sheremetyev, co-founder of Planner 5D.
“Our vision is to empower everyone to become interior designers with an app that combines AI with virtual reality. When we connect interior design techniques with AI, we hope to surpass an average interior designer who works using ‘cookie cutter’ design methods. Later on, we might even win some interior design contests.”
With the help of AI, users’ wishes will be predicted before they even think about a solution, and easily accessed and shown through DIY virtual reality goggles or on one of the in-app 3D projections. For example, when a person chooses their wall colour, the system will suggest furniture that they might like―and everything will be shown through virtual reality technology.
