Dining tastes in Australia have changed dramatically since J Style started importing Japanese ceramics 20 years ago. Demand for dinnerware suited to serving Asian style meals at home has certainly increased. In the past Australians assumed that Asian dinnerware would include the same beige plastic chopsticks and white ceramic soup spoons that they were used to seeing at their local Chinese restaurant. Travel, and the internet, have changed those ideas.
J Style has been heeding the feedback from retailers and expanding its ranges of Japanese tableware. A notable new sales leader is ceramic spoons.
Used as much as dessert spoons as they are as teaspoons, J Style’s gift sets of ceramic teaspoons have long been strong sellers. Retailers are now asking for the option to purchase spoons loose, as well as retaining the gift boxed sets. There have also been increasing requests for Asian style soup spoons in more stylish designs than those used by canape catering companies, or your local Chinese restaurant.
A select few retailers were quick of the mark last year and managed to get some of J Style’s new spoon designs in store just before Christmas. The response was overwhelmingly positive, and orders are already piling up for new stock due to arrive in February.
New designs include cute Kokeshi Doll teaspoons in red, green or blue, spoons in modern colours such as light and dark green wave teaspoons, and funky blue and white paisley design on both teaspoons and soup spoons. Wholesale prices range from $3.15 to $4.40 per spoon loose, or $15 to $20 for gift boxed sets of 4 spoons.
