Yet again the fluid shapes and soft curves of Marc Newson’s inimitable design style perfectly reflect current trends in our daily living. Newson’s dinner set, designed in 2008 in collaboration with Noritake, was originally intended for first class passengers aboard Qantas, but today it is one of the most popular choices for everyday dining throughout Australia.

Australian-born Marc Newson, recognised globally as one of the most influential designers of his generation, is renowned for his clean forms, engineered structure and tactile exploration of materials―which in this case, is the finest bone china produced by Japanese market leader Noritake.

Described as a sleek and fluid reinterpretation of retro-styled tableware, the collection comprises multiple plates, bowls, serving dishes and platters, cups/saucers and mugs plus teapot, creamer and sugar bowl.

While each piece displays the delicate, fine lines Newson intended, the pieces are of Noritake’s renowned commercial quality resilience―chip-resistant, dishwasher safe and microwave safe. The collection’s transition from first class passenger status to everyday use in Australian homes has been seamless.

All of the pieces are sold individually but as of November 2020 Noritake has added a 12-piece dinner set to the collection. It comprises four dinner plates (27.5cm), four entrée plates (21cm) and four multi-bowls (14.5cm) that are suitable for breakfast cereals, soups, noodles, rice and desserts. The set retails for $400 and is gift boxed.

Newson, who originally trained as a silversmith, has also designed a premium collection of industrial-style flatware in collaboration with Noritake. Each piece, in high quality 18/10 stainless steel, is defined by its broad, flat design and distinctive groove in the handle. Sold in a set of 16 pieces (four settings) it retails for $175.
