If dad loves wine, then the best Father’s Day gift is a bottle of wine, right? Wrong, according to Palatable Tea Towels creator, Elizabeth Hollingsworth.
If you’re not a wine connoisseur and you don’t know your pinot grigio from your pinot noir, you could be getting it horribly wrong, especially if your budget is $30, she says.
But how about a gift that that’s novel, practical and will help to support Australia’s wine regions who need our support now more than ever?
Palatable Tea Towels are a new range of premium 100 per cent cotton tea towels featuring maps of Australia’s 12 most renowned wine regions including Mornington Peninsula, Barossa Valley and Margaret River.
The evocative watercolour illustrations by Ballarat artist Caroline Keys will transport dad to his favourite wine region every time he enters the kitchen.
Each tea towel features 15 of the best vineyards in the region, all of which are ranked at least four stars by James Halliday Wine Companion and have a cellar door that is open to the public.
And it’s not all about the wineries. Each Palatable Tea Towel features 15 accommodation providers in the region, catering to a variety of ages and budgets, plus 15 local attractions such as gourmet food stores, farms, wildlife parks and sculpture trails.
“I wanted to create something that reminds us how lucky we are to have such wonderful holiday destinations in Australia, right here on our doorstep,” says Hollingsworth, who dreamed up Palatable Tea Towels while visiting her local wine regions (Yarra Valley and Mornington Peninsula) in between Melbourne’s extended lockdowns in 2020 and 2021.
“The wine regions did it tough during the lockdowns and are still struggling with low visitor numbers as many Australians are choosing to travel overseas this year instead of in their own backyard.
“Palatable Tea Towels are my way of ‘giving back’ by encouraging people to visit the wine regions and soak up all of the delights they have to offer.”
Palatable Tea Towels are stocked in over 35 wineries and retail shops across Australia including De Bortoli Wines in the Yarra Valley and Margan Wines in the Hunter Valley. They retail for $29 each.
