Toy safety in the spotlight ahead of Christmas
potentially dangerous toys are still being sold despite tough regulations according to consumer watchdog choice, which is warning parents and carers to be careful when choosing presents for the holiday season.
it claims given the volume of toys, sporting goods, prams and games imported to australia each year it’s inevitable some hazards slip through.
government figures reveal 39 unsafe toys were recalled in 2010. so far this year, 11 have been pulled off the shelves including a baby xylophone which had a choking hazard.
“some big retailers conduct their own safety testing but there’s no strict guideline as to where problems toys might turn up,” says christopher zinn, choice spokesperson.
“bargain basement stores buy in unbranded cheapies which may not have to same quality checks as big brands, but well-known names have had recalls too.”
consumers are urged to be vigilant when choosing products for kids. choice advises looking out for choking hazards, read warning labels, ensure there is ventilation in large boxes and masks and toys with loud noises which can damage ears.
“while we have good product safety standards in australia, parents and caregivers are really the last line of defence. they should check the toys and take any supervision or safety instructions seriously,” adds zinn.
