Japanese retailer MUJI opens first Australian store
MUJI, a Japanese retail brand known for innovative products at affordable prices will open its first Australian store at Chadstone Melbourne late November.
The store sells homewares, furniture, apparel, travel and stationery goods. It will cover 356.35 square metres of space and stock more than 2,500 different items.
MUJI is well known internationally with over 600 stores across the globe in Japan, Europe and the US. There are plans to open more Melbourne stores before opening locations in other major areas.
“We believe there is a strong customer demand in Australia for the MUJI brand,” says Takuo Nagahara, MUJI Australia managing director. “Australians are well travelled, already experiencing our existing stores across Japan, Asia, Europe and the US. With the opening of the first MUJI store in Australia, our customers will not need to travel out of the country to enjoy MUJI products anymore. They can purchase MUJI products at a convenient location in Melbourne.
“MUJI products cater to the lifestyle of urban city dwellers, thus with this country’s growing economy, we have great confidence and plans for opening more stores in the next few years. We are pleased to introduce MUJI and look forward to building MUJI into the lifestyle of Australians today.”
Launched in 1980, MUJI was created to counteract the trend of consumers paying premium price for products simply because of the brand name. The name MUJI comes from its Japanese name Mujirushi Ryohin meaning no label quality goods.
