Self-watering pot Cup O Flora won an award for its innovative design (housewares and objects) at the recent Good Design Awards held at the Sydney Opera House.
Plants that grow in a Cup O Flora self-absorb water through a wick from the external pot. The pot’s clear design offers an instinctive gauging of the water level in the reservoir, ensuring the plant is always hydrated.
The Good Design Awards jury commented that Cup O Flora is a perfect execution of a simple idea.
“Making self-watering plants in offices and home environments is a worthy challenge, and the designer should be very proud of this outcome. It is a clever idea coupled with considered design,” they said.
Founder and designer, Odi Reuveni, whose passion for plants and soil was inspired by his father, who has designed many gardens over the past 50 years, says he is humbled by the win.
“Our clients have told us how the simple design helped them keep their plants happy and it’s heartening to have it recognised by a panel of experts,” he says.
“The pots have been a big hit in Australia and beyond. We started with a single model four years ago and now have five designs across three sizes.”
Reuveni has been ‘rescuing’ plants from friends and nurseries, and bringing them back to life for most of his life. He used his training as a researcher to explore the market and came across a small plastic pot while travelling in Brazil. He then spent six months improving the design and quality of the product, which resulted in Cup O Flora.
Winners of the Good Design Awards will be on display during Vivid Sydney from 25 to 27 May at the Overseas Passenger Terminal, Circular Quay.
