Aussie reusable coffee cup brand closes down
After seven years in business, eco-friendly brand SoL Cups has closed its doors permanently, citing unfavourable market conditions for its closure.
SoL Cups founder, Rebecca Veksler, launched her company that makes reusable, 100 per cent hand-blown glass coffee cups and water bottles in 2016.
Unfortunately, this journey has come to an end and she has no other choice but to cease operations.
“After almost a decade long journey, we have decided to say goodbye,” Veksler said in a statement on her website and social media.
“An incredibly sad and difficult decision, but under the circumstances, the only choice. The last decade of my life has flown by, dedicated to the mission to create a positive impact on the world around me. Together we have made an impact.
“Together we saved millions of single use coffee cups from landfill and together we made conscious choices to do better for the planet and to inspire those around us to do better too.”
SoL Cups was born after Veksler battled a lifetime of auto-immune problems. When her doctors told her to eliminate all toxins, she faced the dilemma of not wanting to use paper cups, but not being able to use plastic Keep Cup style cups as plastic can leak toxins into your blood. This is what made her decide to create SoL Cups and choose glass as the key element of her cup and bottle products.
And while the Covid pandemic boosted sales for industries such as homewares and toys, for takeaway reusable coffee cups it was a different story as many people started working from home and weren’t commuting anymore. This change in consumer behaviour plus deteriorating market conditions impacted SoL Cups sales to a point where it was no longer sustainable and Veksler had to make the difficult decision to pull the plug.
However, this won’t be the last we see of Veksler as she already has other projects in the pipeline.
