How to create the ultimate retail experience
In today’s hyper-competitive market, retailers who find their ‘unique engagement proposition’ will be the ones who survive, according to London-based creative agency Dalziel & Pow.
The agency has created some of the world’s most innovative retail spaces, including designs for Lululemon and Missguided, and marketing and business development director, David Wright says consumers have changed more in the last five years than in the previous 25.
“From Gen Z to Boomers, this evolving, diverse audience is more demanding, better informed and more creatively empowered than ever before,” he says.
“People are no longer defined by their age, financial status or whereabouts, they’re defined by their attitude and their appetite for engagement. They’re free to shop wherever they want, whenever they want, enjoying fierce pricing wars and brands in competition for convenience and speed.”
Rather than compete on price in a race to the bottom, Wright says retailers should rise to the top by elevating themselves with a clear reason for existence, better ideas and more engaging experiences.
The idea behind the unique engagement proposition (UEP) is that retail experiences do more than simply serve your customers—they engage and influence shopper behaviour, increasing sales and building brand awareness.
Wright says younger consumers in particular are looking for immersive experiences that blur the lines between retail, hospitality and entertainment, and smart retailers are challenging conventional store formats and diversifying in-store experiences to increase dwell-time.
“The best stores in the future may not even sell anything—stores can be educational, experiential, social, or simply a form of advertising, but above all, they should be engaging.”
In order to find your store’s UEP, Wright says there are six pillars to consider.
“We start by defining the brand purpose, we express this with a brand personality, we create places, we motivate the people of the brand (staff, ambassadors and customers), we refine or reinvent the process (ways to shop, serve, educate and facilitate), and finally we advise on product offerings and identify areas for ‘brand stretch’.”
Wright points to UK baby store Mamas & Papas as an example of a retailer nailing this approach.
“The brand’s purpose is to give young families the best start in parenthood, and this informs an experience where the role of the store is to provide a sanctuary for these new mums and dads that reassures and inspires.
“The offer was carefully curated to deliver on this purpose at every touchpoint through an edited range, relevant content, hosted events and a range of helpful services that established Mamas &Papas as the indispensable brand partner on the parenting journey.”
Ultimately, Wright says retail is about giving shoppers a reason to shop.
“How can we tempt them off the sofa and into physical stores? We need to create stores worth visiting. Inevitably in the future we will see fewer and better shops.”
