Urban Road collaborates with artist Anna Johnson
Art retailer and wholesaler Urban Road has collaborated with Australian artist and author Anna Johnson to develop the ‘Come into the Garden’ range of canvas prints.
Urban Road was founded in 2010 by self-taught artist and illustrator Suzie Atkin, who wanted to bring original canvas prints into the homes of art lovers worldwide.
Through the online site customers can choose the size, layout and frame for their artwork. Pieces are also stocked in retailers across Australia.
Throughout her career, Johnson’s work has focused on floral still lives, abstract landscapes and rich, intense colour. This is reflected in her latest collection, with bold colours that depict wattle, poppies, cherry blossom and beautiful bouquets.
“These new watercolours and oil pastel studies dwell in the place where flowers and leaves are freshly cut and compositions are created by changing conditions of light, the flatness of a floral print on an old dress or the vivid shifting tones of a rough arrangement,” explains Johnson.
“The works also test old prejudices—my mother hates carnations, I am profoundly allergic to wattle, have never been mad about red roses. But I love them on the page and wherever I go flowers follow, even to the windowsill of a cheap hotel room.
“The bouquet is here to stay.”
Johnson founded the Australian design company Little Branch with friend Maree Oaten in 2009, and together they have produced artwork for Urban Road. The Come into the Garden collection is Anna’s first independent collection for the brand.
