Monopoly: Sydney Edition hits stores
it is played in 111 countries in 43 languages and 77 years after it first arrived in us shops, sydney now has its own edition of the timeless board game monopoly with sydney harbour scoring the prestigious mayfair position.
the official sydney town crier unveiled the landmarks selected for the board at lady macquarie’s chair on the sydney harbour foreshore this week.
twenty-two locations were chosen to replace the london streets from a range of suggestions via facebook.
“it was enlightening consulting with the public who resoundingly favoured our two famed harbour properties, the sydney harbour bridge and the sydney opera house and so we decided to assign the top property to sydney harbour to reflect both these iconic harbour landmarks,” says reid herbert, pacific business development manager for the game’s manufacturer, winning moves.
“as well as being the location of the sydney opera house and the sydney harbour bridge, sydney harbour is highly regarded as one of the world’s finest harbours for its beauty and it also connects central sydney with much of the extended metropolitan area which is integral to the sydney monopoly board.”
darling harbour was given the other blue spot while the rocks, andrew (boy) charlton pool and cockatoo island were assigned light blue positions. circular quay and taronga zoo also made the board.
red properties are george street, oxford street and martin place. yellow spaces have been reserved for popular beaches bondi, manly and cronulla and sports fans are acknowledged by rugby league central, moore park golf and eastern creek on the pink property cards.
coogee bay, kings cross and circular quay are on orange locations. hyde park has the whitechapel spot and centennial park has the other brown spot.
utilities are acknowledged by tank stream and energyaustralia with sydney transport also represented.
the community chest and chance cards have also been given a sydney makeover. a chance card could see players being fined $m15 for being ‘spotted in the t3 lane on the spit bridge’ or they could score $m100 in community chest for being ‘awarded best float at the sydney mardi gras’.
monopoly: sydney edition goes on sale november 1 and it won’t be the last australian city to be given the monopoly treatment. herbert will be traveling the country next year to identify which cities will get their own version of the board game. he will also seek suggestions via ideas@winningmoves.com.au.
